Mastodon is more than the Gmbh. The fediverse is bigger than Mastodon. There are already popular community server and client forks of Mastodon. The 501c3 board in the US isn't a bad thing. ActivityPub is a w3c governed spec, and there isn't nearly the same level of scrutiny around w3c's board, because it hasn't been an issue. All that to say, I'm not at all concerned about this.

True, many people in the Fediverse are not even using Mastodon at all. If you are concerned about the situation, just pick anything else. There are many, arguably better, alternatives available.

@AndiS 🌞🍷🇪🇺 It's already unimaginable for many Mastodon users that there's more to the Fediverse than Mastodon. Even more than Mastodon and Mastodon derivatives.

Now try to tell them that you're on something that

  • is completely unrelated to Mastodon
  • works vastly different from Mastodon
  • is actually years older than Mastodon
  • has lots of features which Mastodon users have been craving for years
  • has lots of features which Mastodon users just barely dare to dream of
  • has lots of features which go beyond the wildest imagination of most Mastodon users
  • nonetheless, has been federated with Mastodon since Mastodon's own very inception

By the way, it's interesting how most "the Fediverse goes far beyond Mastodon and has features to offer that are completely alien to Mastodon" comments come from Friendica. I guess that's Friendica having comparably few converts from Twitter via Mastodon and comparably many people who never thought the Fediverse is only Mastodon, combined with Friendica not locking itself away from Mastodon as much as Misskey or Hubzilla.
